Our culture tells us that health looks a certain way, and generally that means thin. It tells us that if we are fat, then we are unhealthy and in order to be healthy we must lose weight. Ironically, our diet culture that exists to help people do just that is often flawed and counterproductive. It feeds into the idea that we are not worthy just as we are, encourages disordered behavior of restriction and rigorous exercise, and further internalizes individuals’ own weight stigma and often leads to poor mental health and well-being. Here’s the problem: weight is just ONE physical indicator of health, and honestly it’s not even a great one. What about everything else? What about metabolic health? What about mental health? What about overall lifestyle and well-being? We are whole people, with whole lives, and our well-being can not be boiled down to one indicator on the scale. I’ve dieted a thousand times, put my body through the yo-yo cycle of gaining and losing, and perpetuated my own self-loathing in and out of weight loss. It wasn’t until I found peace with my body as it was that I could lovingly pursue the person I wanted to be mentally, emotionally, and physically. Your journey to health doesn’t need to start with a diet plan or an exercise program. It needs to start with your head and heart accepting and loving you and your body just as you are. Self-love doesn’t come from looking a certain way or weighing a certain weight. It’s not a destination, it’s a decision. So if weight is just one indicator, then why am I sharing this side by side photo? To show you that you can be a fierce, confident woman at any size. You can love yourself just as you are while striving to become an even better version. Size does not define you or your worth, you do. And today, my friends, is an opportunity to believe that you are completely worthy just as you are.
